The Netflix problem

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I am pretty sure everybody has had this problem before. You drop a plethora of old classics onto your Netflix queue and you plan to watch them every night. But then a more modern movie comes up in the mail or is broadcasting on television. So that classic ends up sitting there. I know. I have been there before. CollegeHumor came up with this great video that showcases the aptly named “Netflix Problem”.

Toshiba brings Bullet Time filming to new heights

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Toshiba’s new advertisement for their new low-definition to high-definition upscaling technology has been turning heads as it takes the The Matrix Bullet-Time film technique to new heights. It was filmed using a 200 Gigashot camara 14-meter diameter filming rig. And unlike the Wachowski Brothers, who used static images, this advertisement used looped video clips and digitally compiled the videos together. Filming only took 3 days, but editing took about four weeks and it had a hefty price tag of $4.7 million. Check it out and let us know what you think:

Dark Knight About to Hit 1 Billion

Monday, November 10th, 2008

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight stands poised to join the very exclusive billion dollar club in Hollywood. Sitting at 992.8 million dollars, the Dark Knight is about to cross the threshold. Domestically, the movie has grossed over 520 million and is about 70 million dollars short of the all time highest which is Titanic. The producers are planning a theatrical re-release come January which should make things interesting though. They have cited the reason (besides making lots-o-bling) as being so that the film is fresh in the minds of academy voters. I’m not sure if I will pay 10 dollars to go see the movie again but I definitely bet there are people out there who would.

Dilbert and hybrid cars

Friday, November 7th, 2008

In my opinion, Dilbert is the best comic strip out there that is not called Boondocks. Dilbert’s inquiries into societal issues as well as the office environment always seem to hit home with me. I found this one about hybrid cars and felt I should share it with the world.

Forum Behavior

Friday, November 7th, 2008

The anonymity of internet forums provides an excellent place for normally timid and arguably geeky people to reveal their inner bullies. I thought this video was both hilarious and very educational. It stresses restraint and maturity when dealing with forum trolls. I have re-evaluated my own outlook on forums and after much reflection have decided to call off the bounty on the head of a certain forum poster who launched a barrage of inflammatory attacks against my mother. If only everybody could behave in a civil manner, Internet forums might actually be a place of free exchange of ideas. Instead it often degrades into pointless arguments and racist comments.

CNN Hologram! sorta…

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

The whole country watched the results of the 2008 Presidential elections on CNN and no doubt noticed the addition of “holograms” to the discussions process. Contrary to what the sci-fi geek within me would LOVE to believe, those were not really holograms. Instead, a sophisticaed system was implemented to give the Television viewer the illusion of a 3 dimensional hologram. In reality, the person was actually in a studio surrounded by a ring of cameras (35 HD cameras to be exact) in Chicago which were then synchronized to CNN’s cameras. The CNN anchor was in actually talking to nothing! The image of the “hologram” was then broadcast onto the video from CNN itself. It is in reality just a complex special effects trick. Sorry to all those Star Wars fans out there, it might still take a few years before you can have your holographic Princess Leia

What Michael Jackson should look like?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

michael jackson at 50

The Daily Mail of the UK released renderings of what Michael Jackson should look like now that he’s 50 if he had not had so much plastic surgery. Looks like an average guy huh? It’s sad where the state of the King of Pop is today, maybe one day he’ll make a comeback.
