AMD takes shot at NVIDIA

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

We aren’t sure if this is an “official” advertisement from AMD, but it sure looks as if AMD are taking swings at NVIDIA. And they seem to have done a good job with it too. AMD’s low budget cartoon seems to poke fun NVIDIA’s troubles over the past year. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Minority Report Super Computer a reality?!?

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

I’m pretty sure techno geeks everywhere were drooling all over themselves when they first watched the Tom Cruise movie Minority Report. That was because of that supercomputer that Tom Cruise was using to look at police files and what not. Well apparently, that supercomputer is a reality. Oblong Industries has developed G-Speak, a computer that is based on hand-gesture input and real world heads-up  displays. John Underkoffler, the founder of Oblong Industries and a science advisor to the Minority Report film, said the following about G-Speak:

“Every graphical and input object in a g-speak environment has real-world spatial identity and position. Anything on-screen can be manipulated directly. For a g-speak user, ‘pointing’ is literal.”

Although I don’t expect to see this supercomputer in homes in the near future, and I’m pretty sure you have to put up your house to put a down payment, it is really cool to know where our technology has gone. It feels great to know that no matter what, technology will always progress. Check out the following video on G-Speak and leave us a comment about what you think.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 specs finalized

Monday, November 17th, 2008

USB 3.0

USB 3.0 is no secret, info about the new USB spec has been around the net for some time now. Called SuperSpeed USB it will feature transfer speeds of 4.8Gbps, that’s a 25GB HD in 70 seconds! It will feature extra data lines to give it more sustained data transfers that make it optimal for camcorders and digital cameras. It also will deliver faster charging speeds over USB 3.0. One bad note is that you won’t be able to use older USB cables with SuperSpeed USB 3.0, you’ll need to upgrade to USB 3.0 hardware. But at those speeds it will be worth it!

New Laptop Batteries Last 8x Longer

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

notebook battery life

A team of researches led by Professor Cho Jae-Phil  of the Department of Applied Chemistry at Hanyang University have conducted research resulting in a notebook battery that can last up to 8 times longer than existing batteries. WIth this new technology, you would actually be able to get through the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy when you’re on a plane (that is if the first movie doesn’t put you to sleep already). The new technology replaces the graphite (which can only hold relatively low amount of lithium ions) in conventional batteries with Silicon yielding the startling increase in battery performance. Imagine the day when notebook battery life is no longer an issue! No more reading books to pass the time!

Fujitsu Notebook Fujitsu N7010 Touchscreen

In the latest outbreak of touchscreen fever, the Fujitsu Lifebook N7010 will have an integrated touchscreen located above the keyboard. It was designed to be an app launcher as well as a CD/DVD control panel but according to Fujitsu can actually function as a tiny screen to view photos or whatever else you want to drag onto it. Specs wise, the N7010 is a very capable notebook with 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo Processor,  HDMI-out and a trackpad with multitouch support. The notebook will also ship with a Blu-Ray drive and 4 GB of RAM. All in all, the Fujitsu N7010 is not a notebook for the casual enthusiast and the price is set around 1500 dollars when it ships in November.
